Business
SPDR Gold MiniShares Trust (GLDM) is a Delaware statutory trust that issues shares representing fractional undivided beneficial ownership interests in physical gold bullion, providing investors with a cost-effective vehicle to track the performance of the price of gold bullion less the Trust's expenses. The Trust's sole assets consist of physical gold bullion bars held in allocated accounts with custodians ICBC Standard Bank Plc and JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. London branches, along with incidental cash; shares are issued and redeemed only in Creation Units of 100,000 shares to Authorized Participants in exchange for gold bullion, and trade on NYSE Arca under the ticker GLDM like ordinary stocks, enabling continuous intraday trading with market, limit, and stop-loss orders. The Trust's only ordinary recurring expense is the Sponsor's annual fee of 0.10% of net asset value, making it one of the lowest-cost U.S.-listed physically backed gold exchange-traded products; net asset value is calculated daily using the LBMA Gold Price PM, with holdings, NAV, and market data transparently available at spdrgoldshares.com. Founded in 2014 as part of the World Gold Trust and launched on June 25, 2018, the Trust is sponsored by WGC USA Asset Management Company, LLC, a World Gold Council affiliate headquartered at 685 Third Avenue, New York, New York, with principal operations supported by administrator and transfer agent The Bank of New York Mellon in Brooklyn, New York, trustee Delaware Trust Company in Wilmington, Delaware, and marketing agent State Street Global Advisors Funds Distributors, LLC in Boston, Massachusetts. GLDM targets retail and institutional investors seeking long-term, liquid exposure to gold without the costs of direct physical ownership, storage, or insurance; it operates globally via the 24-hour over-the-counter gold market, with shares accessible through U.S. exchanges and brokerage accounts worldwide. Recent operational enhancements include the addition of JPMorgan Chase Bank, N.A. as a second gold custodian on December 7, 2023, diversifying safekeeping arrangements for the Trust's bullion; by June 2023, GLDM marked its fifth anniversary with over $6.2 billion in assets under management, establishing it as the third-largest U.S. gold ETF and leader among low-cost options. The product continues to emphasize liquidity through creation and redemption mechanisms aligned with market demand, with no reported acquisitions, funding rounds, or strategic alliances in the past two years, maintaining its passive structure amid sustained investor inflows reflecting gold's role in diversified portfolios.
