Business
iShares Government Money Market ETF (GMMF) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks current income consistent with liquidity and stability of principal by investing primarily in short-term U.S. government securities and repurchase agreements collateralized by such securities; U.S. Treasury bills, notes, and bonds; obligations issued or guaranteed by U.S. government agencies such as Federal Home Loan Banks and Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation discount notes; and variable and floating-rate instruments, all while adhering to Rule 2a-7 money market fund guidelines under the Investment Company Act of 1940. The fund, which calculates its net asset value based on market value rather than amortized cost and trades on the NYSE Arca exchange, targets institutional and retail investors seeking low-risk cash management solutions, capital preservation, and intraday liquidity as an alternative to traditional money market funds or deposit accounts. Launched by BlackRock on February 4, 2025, as part of iShares, and headquartered in New York with operations focused on the U.S. market, GMMF features a 0.20% expense ratio, monthly distributions, a weighted average maturity of approximately 41 days, and a weighted average life of 86 days as of September 30, 2025. In a significant strategic expansion, BlackRock launched GMMF alongside the iShares Prime Money Market ETF (PMMF) on February 5, 2025, marking the industry's first prime money market ETF and enhancing access to professional-grade cash strategies amid U.S. money market fund assets surpassing $6 trillion in 2024. The fund has grown its assets under management to $76.38 million with 760,000 shares outstanding by September 2025, reflecting steady inflows and ongoing monthly dividend payments, such as the June 2025 ex-dividend of $0.32271 per share. Managed by BlackRock's Cash Management Group, which oversees nearly $1 trillion in cash strategies, GMMF provides transparency, efficiency, and diversification for conservative fixed-income portfolios without FDIC insurance or sponsor support guarantees.
