GMO Trust - GMO Opportunistic Income Fund (GMODX) is an open-end mutual fund that seeks capital appreciation and current income by investing primarily in securitized credit securities within the structured finance marketplace, including asset-backed securities, mortgage-backed securities, collateralized debt obligations, and securities backed by pools of receivables across various industries with fixed or variable interest rates; the fund also invests in other fixed-income instruments such as bonds issued or guaranteed by the U.S. government, non-U.S. governments, and private sector entities, as well as interest-only and principal-only debt, inverse floating rate debt, mortgage dollar rolls, when-issued securities, mortgage loans, exchange-traded funds, and derivatives including swap contracts, futures, forward currency contracts, options, swaptions, reverse repurchase agreements, and repurchase agreements. The fund employs a top-down and bottom-up security selection approach by GMO's Structured Products team to allocate assets among structured fixed income sub-sectors based on relative value assessments, targeting inefficiencies from market fragmentation, segmentation, and structural anomalies to generate alpha through unconstrained risk diversification and security selection. The fund is part of GMO Trust, advised by GMO LLC (Grantham, Mayo, Van Otterloo & Co. LLC), a Boston-headquartered investment management firm founded in 1977 with global offices including London, Singapore, Sydney, San Francisco, and Amsterdam, serving sophisticated institutions, financial intermediaries, and families across asset classes with a focus on long-term value-oriented strategies. In a significant reorganization, the fund serves as the accounting and performance successor to the GMO Debt Opportunities Fund, a former series of GMO Trust; effective January 1, 2017, it changed its name from GMO Debt Opportunities Fund to GMO Opportunistic Income Fund, shifted its investment objective from positive total return to capital appreciation and current income, and eliminated the policy requiring at least 80% of assets in debt investments to pursue substantially identical strategies with greater flexibility. No major partnerships, acquisitions, funding rounds, new product launches, or strategic expansions specific to this fund have been reported in the last 1-2 years, though GMO LLC has advanced broader fixed income initiatives, including reiterating a strong "once-in-a-generation" call on emerging market local debt amid U.S. policy shifts in 2025 and launching the GMO Dynamic Allocation ETF (GMOD) in October 2025 as its first multi-asset ETF offering dynamic reallocation across equities and other assets. The fund operates within the U.S. mutual fund market, targeting investors seeking opportunistic fixed income exposure without geographic limitations on underlying securities, and maintains no principal leverage component despite extensive derivative use.
