Business
Hammerson plc owns, manages, and develops prime urban retail and leisure destinations across the UK, Ireland, and France as a leading UK-listed real estate investment trust. The company invests in flagship shopping centres including Brent Cross in London, Bullring and Grand Central in Birmingham, Cabot Circus in Bristol, The Oracle in Reading, Westquay in Southampton, Dundrum Town Centre and Ilac Centre in Dublin, Les 3 Fontaines in Cergy-Pontoise, and O'Parinor in Aulnay-sous-Bois; it also pursues mixed-use developments incorporating retail, leisure, residential, office, and community spaces such as the ongoing Brent Cross redevelopment, Martineau Galleries, and Dublin Central projects. Founded in 1942 and headquartered at 27 Kingsway, London, Hammerson operates primarily through property leasing, development of building projects, buying and selling of real estate, and management services, targeting high-growth urban catchments with leisure-anchored assets valued at £2.6 billion as of December 2024 including joint ventures. In recent strategic moves, Hammerson acquired its joint venture partner's 50% stake in Bullring and Grand Central in October 2025 for £319 million via a share placing and cash resources to gain full control of this super-prime Birmingham destination; it increased its ownership in Brent Cross amid a £1.4 billion redevelopment doubling the centre's size with added stores, restaurants, cinema, hotel, and public spaces; and in November 2025 completed the acquisition of the remaining 50% interest in The Oracle, Reading, for £104.5 million while upgrading FY25 earnings guidance to £102 million EPRA earnings with 17% gross rental income growth. The company refinanced debt including a new €350 million facility for Dundrum JV maturing 2031 and issued bonds to extend maturities, following 2024 disposals of Union Square and Value Retail to reposition towards core prime assets.
