Business
iShares Evolved U.S. Media and Entertainment ETF (IEME) is an exchange-traded fund that provides exposure to U.S. stocks in the media and entertainment sector using an alternative classification system powered by machine learning algorithms developed by BlackRock. The fund invests primarily in large-, mid-, and small-cap equities operating across communication services, media, and entertainment; key sectors include consumer services (57.18%), technology services (25.35%), consumer durables (5.03%), and communications (4.8%), with top holdings such as FOXA, ATVI, and DIS comprising significant portions of assets. Managed by BlackRock Fund Advisors as part of the iShares U.S. ETF Trust, it employs quantitative analysis and proprietary research to select and weight stocks based on keyword prominence in annual reports, allowing multi-sector assignments with proportional weighting; the fund benchmarks against the S&P Total Market Index and was formed on March 21, 2018, with operations domiciled in the United States and principal offices c/o BlackRock at 400 Howard Street, San Francisco, CA. The ETF targets investors seeking growth and value opportunities in diversified U.S. market capitalizations within media and entertainment, with minor international exposure including Canada (1.06%) and Israel (0.06%). It features 90 holdings, with 44.12% concentrated in the top 10 positions, and focuses on active management without strict index replication. In a major development announced on June 17, 2022, BlackRock terminated the fund due to declining assets below viable levels, ceasing trading after market close on August 22, 2022, and liquidating shares at $27.778283 cash per share on August 25, 2022. This closure marked the end of operations for IEME, with no subsequent relaunches, funding rounds, acquisitions, partnerships, or product expansions reported as of 2025; options contracts were adjusted for cash settlement and accelerated expirations to September 16, 2022. The liquidation reflects a strategic contraction in BlackRock's evolved ETF lineup, eliminating IEME from active trading on U.S. exchanges.
