Business
iShares Global Energy ETF (IXC) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the investment results of an index composed of global equities in the energy sector. The fund employs a representative sampling technique to replicate the performance of the S&P Global 1200 Energy 4.5/22.5/45 Capped Index, focusing on large-cap companies engaged in energy activities including oil and gas exploration, production, refining, marketing, and transportation; equipment and services; and coal and consumable fuels. Launched on November 12, 2001, and managed by BlackRock Fund Advisors under the iShares brand of BlackRock, Inc., the ETF is domiciled in the United States with headquarters in New York. IXC provides investors with diversified exposure to the global energy industry through holdings in major companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. (approximately 17.5% weight), Chevron Corp. (11.0%), Shell plc (7.8%), TotalEnergies SE (5.0%), and ConocoPhillips (4.3%), among 74 total positions as of recent data, with the top 10 holdings comprising over 60% of assets. The fund distributes dividends quarterly, maintains a net expense ratio of 0.40% (comprising a 0.39% management fee and minimal other expenses), and invests at least 80% of its assets in index components or substantially identical securities, with up to 20% in futures, options, swaps, cash, and equivalents. It targets institutional and retail investors seeking passive exposure to energy equities across developed and emerging markets worldwide. Geographically, IXC offers broad operations spanning North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and other regions through its multinational holdings, with significant weighting toward U.S.-based firms alongside international majors like Shell and TotalEnergies. The ETF trades on the NYSE Arca exchange under the ticker IXC, with total net assets of approximately $1.83-1.84 billion. In recent developments, portfolio manager changes occurred effective April 1, 2025, with Peter Sietsema, Matt Waldron, and Steven White joining Jennifer Hsui as co-managers, reflecting BlackRock's ongoing team enhancements for iShares ETFs. No major partnerships, acquisitions, funding rounds, new product launches, or strategic shifts specific to IXC were reported in 2024 or 2025, underscoring the fund's stable passive structure amid broader energy market dynamics. The fund maintains its non-ESG focus, explicitly stating it does not pursue sustainable or impact strategies.
