Business
John Hancock Multifactor Consumer Discretionary ETF (JHMC) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the John Hancock Dimensional Consumer Discretionary Index using a full replication technique. The ETF invests in growth and value stocks of companies across diversified market capitalizations operating in the consumer discretionary sector, with weighting emphasizing four key factors: small size, low relative price, high profitability, and high investment; top holdings typically include leading U.S. firms in automobiles, apparel, leisure, hotels, restaurants, and diversified consumer services. JHMC trades on the NYSE Arca exchange and is subadvised by Dimensional Fund Advisors, a pioneer in multifactor investing. Launched in September 2015 as part of John Hancock Investment Management's inaugural suite of multifactor ETFs, JHMC forms part of a broader lineup managed under Manulife John Hancock Investments, which continues to offer the fund alongside other Dimensional-subadvised equity strategies targeting large cap, mid cap, small cap, international, emerging markets, and additional sectors. The fund targets institutional and retail investors seeking factor-based exposure to the U.S. consumer discretionary segment, which encompasses non-essential goods and services sensitive to economic cycles. John Hancock Investment Management, the issuer, is headquartered at 200 Berkeley Street in Boston, Massachusetts, and operates as a division of Manulife Investment Management with a history tracing back to 1862. In recent years, John Hancock Investment Management has strategically evolved its ETF lineup, announcing in September 2022 the closure of 10 underperforming sector-specific ETFs while reaffirming commitment to the Dimensional-subadvised multifactor suite that includes JHMC, representing the majority of its ETF assets under management nearing $5 billion at the time. The firm has since expanded into active income-focused ETFs subadvised by partners such as Manulife Investment Management, Marathon Asset Management, and Boston Partners, including launches like the John Hancock High Yield ETF (JHHY) in May 2024; no closures or major changes have affected JHMC, which remains actively traded with assets under management around $9.2 million as of late 2025. These shifts reflect a focus on high-conviction strategies amid growing ETF market demand for strategic beta and active products.
