Business
John Hancock Multifactor Consumer Staples ETF (JHMS) is an exchange-traded fund incorporated in the United States that seeks to track the performance of the John Hancock Dimensional Consumer Staples Index through a full replication technique. The fund invests in growth and value stocks of large- and mid-cap companies operating across the consumer staples sector, including public equity markets in the United States with exposure to diversified market capitalizations; it focuses on multi-factor strategies emphasizing profitability, investment, and momentum factors subadvised by Dimensional Fund Advisors L.P. Launched on March 28, 2016, as part of John Hancock Investment Management's initial suite of sector multifactor ETFs, JHMS was managed by John Hancock Investment Management LLC, a division of Manulife Investment Management headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts. In a major strategic shift announced on September 22, 2022, John Hancock Investment Management decided to close and liquidate JHMS along with nine other underperforming sector ETFs, representing approximately 5% of its overall ETF assets, to refocus on core multifactor equity products subadvised by Dimensional Fund Advisors and newer income-focused offerings. The fund ceased accepting creation orders after October 17, 2022, stopped trading on NYSE Arca at market close on October 24, 2022, and completed liquidation on October 26, 2022, distributing pro rata cash proceeds to remaining shareholders. JHMS targeted institutional and retail investors seeking sector-specific exposure within the consumer defensive segment, with geographic operations limited to U.S. equities.
