Business
Nuveen Real Asset Income and Growth Fund (NYSE: JRI) is a diversified closed-end management investment company that seeks a high level of current income and long-term capital appreciation through investments in securities issued by real asset-related companies worldwide; these include common stocks, preferred securities, and debt instruments of entities engaged in owning, operating, or developing infrastructure projects, facilities, and services, as well as real estate investment trusts (REITs). Up to 40% of its assets may be allocated to debt securities, potentially rated below investment grade (with no more than 10% in securities rated CCC+/Caa1 or lower), while non-U.S. exposure typically ranges from 25% to 75% of managed assets; the Fund employs leverage and may opportunistically write call options to enhance risk-adjusted total returns. It targets income-focused investors seeking exposure to inflation-hedging physical assets such as real estate, infrastructure, master limited partnerships, and energy/utilities-related equities across global markets. Launched on March 1, 2007 and headquartered at 333 W. Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois, the Fund operates as part of Nuveen, a subsidiary of TIAA with roots dating to 1898 and expertise in fixed income, municipal bonds, and real assets. The portfolio is co-managed by Nuveen Fund Advisors, LLC and Nuveen Asset Management, LLC. Recent developments include the addition of James Kim to the portfolio management team effective February 11, 2025, joining Benjamin Kerl, Brenda Langenfeld, Tryg Sarsland, and Noah Hauser, with no anticipated change to the Fund's investment strategy. In June 2025, Nuveen announced distribution declarations for JRI alongside a policy shift for peer fund Nuveen Multi-Asset Income Fund (NMAI) to monthly payouts, reflecting ongoing efforts to appeal to cash-flow-oriented investors; JRI maintained its monthly distribution at $0.1335 per share. Broader Nuveen initiatives, such as the September 2025 strategic partnership involving Nuveen Private Capital with Hunter Point Capital and Temasek for private credit expansion, and the June 2025 acquisition of Brooklyn Investment Group for multi-asset direct indexing, underscore the parent's commitment to scaling real asset and alternative income platforms amid market cycles.
