Business
KIOCL Limited, established in 1976 and headquartered in Bengaluru, India, is a state-owned enterprise primarily engaged in iron ore mining, beneficiation, and production of iron ore pellets. The company operates through two main segments: Pellet and Pig Iron. It manufactures and sells iron ore pellets, used as feedstock in blast furnaces and direct reduction iron plants domestically and internationally, and produces pig iron. KIOCL additionally provides operation and maintenance services, mineral exploration, technical consultancy in beneficiation and pelletisation technology, and turnkey project execution. Its iron oxide pellets are noted for excellent chemical and physical properties, meeting global metallurgical standards. KIOCL's pellet production unit in Mangaluru, Karnataka, has an annual capacity of 3.5 million tonnes, alongside a pig iron manufacturing facility with a capacity of 216,000 tonnes per annum. In recent developments, KIOCL has embarked on major strategic realignments involving expanding its raw material base through the acquisition and development of the Devadari Iron Ore Mine, positioning production to commence by December 2025, thus securing a consistent ore supply. The company is undertaking a significant backward integration project by constructing a Coke Oven Plant, with substantial progress reported, aimed at reviving its Blast Furnace Unit to reduce raw material costs and boost operational efficiency. KIOCL is simultaneously advancing digitalization initiatives with ERP implementation and Industry 4.0 adoption to optimize operations. Further investments include a planned Ductile Iron Spun Pipe Plant to enter downstream product segments and upgrade environmental infrastructure such as sewage treatment and pollution control measures. These projects demonstrate KIOCL’s focus on operational continuity, cost optimization, enhanced product portfolio, and sustainability. KIOCL operates under the aegis of the Ministry of Steel, Government of India, and holds Miniratna Category-I status. Its products serve key steel manufacturing markets across India, Australia, China, Japan, Taiwan, Turkey, the United States, and multiple European countries. The company's export-oriented pellet production supports steel mills worldwide, emphasizing KIOCL’s international footprint. With a workforce of over 600 employees, KIOCL remains an ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015, and ISO 45001:2018 certified organization, reflecting its commitment to quality management, environmental stewardship, and occupational health and safety. Overall, KIOCL Limited delivers comprehensive iron ore mining, beneficiation, and pellet production services while expanding through strategic mining projects, integration of coke production, digital transformation, and entry into value-added downstream products to strengthen its market position domestically and globally. Its ongoing investments and operational improvements underpin its long-term growth strategy in the iron ore and steel raw material sector.
