Business
Magadh Sugar & Energy Limited, a prominent member of the K.K. Birla Group of Sugar Companies, manufactures and sells sugar and its by-products including molasses, bagasse, press mud, industrial alcohol, ethanol, and denatured spirits; it also generates cogeneration power from bagasse and operates distillery units, with three integrated sugar complexes in Bihar at Narkatiaganj, Sidhwalia, and Hasanpur boasting a combined crushing capacity of 21,500 TCD, distillery capacity of 155 KLPD (primarily molasses-based, with grain-based conversion underway), and 38 MW power generation capacity. Incorporated on March 19, 2015, through mergers and demergers of sugar undertakings from The Oudh Sugar Mills Ltd. and Upper Ganges Sugar & Industries Ltd.—with original units tracing back to 1932—the company is headquartered in Kolkata, West Bengal, and primarily serves the Indian market through an extensive network of wholesalers across six states while engaging over 100,000 sugarcane farmers in Bihar. Recent developments include a capacity expansion at the Narkatiaganj unit by 2,500 TCD to reach 21,500 TCD total in FY25, implementation of steam-saving measures and distillery upgrades for enhanced efficiency, and board approval on November 11, 2024, for a new 100 KLPD greenfield multi-feed distillery with steam-saving features at Hasanpur at an estimated cost of INR 2,068.7 million to be funded by debt and internal accruals, expected by March 2027 to support India's Ethanol Blending Program; the company maintains a strong financial risk profile with a gearing ratio of 0.85x as of March 31, 2025, and continues proactive investments aligning with national biofuel priorities.
