- MEG Energy Corp. is a Canadian oil sands producer focused on sustainable in situ thermal oil production in the southern Athabasca oil sands region of Alberta. The company develops enhanced oil recovery projects utilizing steam-assisted gravity drainage (SAGD) extraction methods to produce bitumen from reservoirs more than 1,000 feet below the surface; it transports and sells its thermal oil, marketed as Access Western Blend (AWB), to customers throughout North America and internationally. MEG owns a 100% interest in over 410 square miles of mineral leases and operates its flagship Christina Lake Project, a multi-phased development located 150 kilometers south of Fort McMurray comprising approximately 200 square kilometers of land, where it employs proprietary technologies to reduce energy and water use, capital and operating costs, and greenhouse gas intensity. Founded in 1999 as McCaffrey Energy Group Inc. and headquartered in Calgary, Alberta, MEG became a subsidiary of Cenovus Energy Inc. following the completion of its CA$7.9 billion cash-and-stock acquisition on November 13, 2025, after agreeing to the deal in August 2025 and rejecting a prior hostile bid from Strathcona Resources; this transaction consolidates adjacent SAGD assets at Christina Lake, enabling integrated development, accelerated resource access, and synergies exceeding $400 million annually by 2028. In May 2024, Darlene Gates succeeded Derek Evans as President and Chief Executive Officer.
