Business
Amplify U.S. Alternative Harvest ETF (MJUS) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks income and long-term growth of capital by investing at least 80% of its net assets in securities of U.S. companies deriving at least 50% of their revenue from the cannabis business, including cultivation, production, marketing, and distribution of cannabis and cannabis-derived products; production and distribution of prescription drugs, supplements, or food products containing cannabis-derived ingredients; and provision of supporting products or services such as technology, real estate, or financial services for the cannabis industry. The fund employs total return swaps and direct equity holdings to achieve exposure to representative components of the Prime U.S. Alternative Harvest Index, with top holdings including swaps on Green Thumb Industries, Trulieve Cannabis, Cresco Labs, Verano Holdings, and Glass House Brands, alongside U.S. Treasury bills for liquidity. It targets multi-state operators, plant-touching companies, and ancillary service providers in the U.S. cannabis sector, operating exclusively within North American developed markets and listed on NYSE Arca. Launched on May 12, 2021, as ETFMG U.S. Alternative Harvest ETF by ETF Managers Group within ETF Managers Trust (headquartered in Wilmington, Delaware), the fund underwent a significant reorganization on January 29, 2024, when it was acquired and rebranded by Amplify Investments LLC, a Chicago, Illinois-based provider of exchange-traded funds operating under Amplify ETF Trust. In a major recent development, Amplify ETFs announced the fund's termination and liquidation on January 8, 2025, following a Board of Trustees recommendation; the fund ceased accepting creation orders after January 20, 2025, halted trading at market close on January 27, 2025, and distributed liquidation proceeds to remaining shareholders around January 30, 2025. This strategic closure reflects ongoing challenges in the U.S. cannabis investment landscape, including limited assets under management of approximately $62-70 million and regulatory hurdles for cannabis-related securities. No notable partnerships, acquisitions, or new product launches were reported in the last 1-2 years prior to liquidation.
