Business
Datasonic Group Berhad is an investment holding and security-focused information and communications technology (ICT) solutions provider headquartered in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Founded in 1980 as Datasonic Corporation and incorporated under its current corporate structure in 2008, the company operates across three primary business segments: Customised Smart Card Solutions, Manufacturing, and Investment Holding. Datasonic specializes in the provision of comprehensive ICT solutions, secure document personalization, identity management systems, and smart card manufacturing for public sector agencies, financial institutions, and commercial enterprises across Malaysia and Southeast Asia. The company operates through key operating subsidiaries, including Datasonic Technologies Sdn Bhd, Datasonic Corporation Sdn Bhd, Datasonic Manufacturing Sdn Bhd, Datasonic Smart Solutions Sdn Bhd, and Innov8tif Holdings Sdn Bhd. The company's core products and services encompass secure government identification and border control systems, including the design, personalization, and supply of Malaysia's National Identity Cards (MyKad), ICAO-compliant electronic passports (ePassports) with embedded biometric microchips, foreign worker identification cards (i-Kad), driver's licenses, and secure immigration control credentials; automated border management and digital credentialing solutions, including multi-modal biometric e-gates, automated passport readers, and facial and fingerprint recognition software; financial and commercial payment card systems, comprising Europay, MasterCard, and Visa (EMV) compliant smart cards, Malaysian Chip Card Specification (MCCS) debit cards, centralized and distributed personalization management systems, desktop embossers, and card issuance hardware; digital identity and customer verification platforms, including the MyNasional digital ID framework, automated electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) software, digital document authentication engines, and optical character recognition (OCR) identity validation tools; and integrated ICT infrastructure and surveillance solutions, consisting of self-service banking and immigration kiosks, telecommunications networking services, closed-circuit television (CCTV) monitoring, perimeter security architectures, technical consultancy, and customized software development and maintenance. In recent strategic and operational developments, Datasonic has actively expanded its footprint in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital identity assurance. In November 2024, the group completed the acquisition of a 51 percent majority equity stake in Innov8tif Holdings Sdn Bhd for RM40 million in cash, integrating AI-driven digital identity, e-KYC onboarding, and biometric anti-fraud platforms into its portfolio. Following a corporate restructuring and shareholder-approved rebranding to NexG Berhad in February 2025, the company officially reverted its corporate name back to Datasonic Group Berhad in October 2026. On the operational front, Datasonic secured multiple contract extensions from the Malaysian Ministry of Home Affairs in July 2025 for passport and identification document supplies, followed in October 2025 by a six-year contract valued at approximately RM733 million to modernize Malaysia's MyKad national identification card infrastructure. The group continues to advance its digital onboarding ecosystems and biometric authentication capabilities to support regional public sector and enterprise transformation initiatives.
