Business
East African Portland Cement PLC manufactures, markets, and sells cement and cement-related building materials for infrastructure, commercial, and residential construction markets in Kenya and the broader East African region. Founded in 1933 and headquartered in Athi River, Kenya, the company operates an integrated manufacturing facility with an annual production capacity of approximately 1.3 million metric tonnes and distributes products through an extensive network of authorized stockists, institutional contractors, and commercial builders. The company’s core product portfolio comprises Blue Triangle Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC 42.5N), engineered for heavy civil works, high-rise buildings, bridges, and structural precast concrete; Blue Triangle Pozzolanic Portland Cement (PPC 32.5N), formulated for general building construction, masonry mortar, plastering, and sulphate-resistant coastal or marine applications; Green Triangle Cement (GTC), a low-carbon eco-friendly masonry cement tailored for block laying, rendering, and concrete repairs; semi-processed clinker and mineral aggregates; and specialized precast concrete solutions alongside construction materials testing and technical advisory services. In recent strategic developments, Tanzanian conglomerate Amsons Group, operating through its subsidiary Kalahari Cement Ltd, completed transactions in late 2025 to acquire a controlling 68.7% majority stake in the company by purchasing the equity previously held by Holcim-affiliated entities and the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), alongside its interest held via Bamburi Cement PLC. Backed by this change in corporate ownership, the company initiated a USD 200 million multi-year modernization and expansion program aimed at scaling aggregate production capacity toward 4 million metric tonnes per annum, which includes comprehensive kiln refurbishments at the Athi River plant and the development of a new energy-efficient clinker and grinding facility in Kajiado County. Additionally, the company concluded a multi-year financial turnaround by returning to sustained net profitability, reinstating shareholder dividend distributions after a 13-year hiatus, and implementing a land regularization and non-core property monetization program across its Mavoko landholdings to finance capital expenditure initiatives without incurring excessive long-term debt.
