Business
Lafarge Africa Plc is a Nigeria-based building materials and construction solutions company engaged in the manufacturing, marketing, and distribution of cement, aggregates, ready-mix concrete, and specialized building products. The company operates primarily through its Cement, Aggregates, and Ready-Mix Concrete business segments. Its product portfolio comprises specialized and general-purpose cement varieties, including Elephant Cement for general construction and structural masonry; Supaset, a rapid-hardening Portland cement formulated specifically for block making and precast applications; Powermax, a premium high-performance cement designed for civil engineering and heavy infrastructure projects; Unicem, supplying commercial and residential builders across eastern and southern Nigeria; AshakaCem, serving infrastructure and housing developments in northern Nigeria; and Watershield, a water-repellent cement developed for moisture-prone structures and waterproofing needs. In its concrete and dry-mix division, the company provides standard and tailored ready-mix concrete formulations; decorative and high-performance concrete solutions, including Hydromedia pervious concrete; aggregates, such as crushed granite and sand for construction and asphalt production; Supafix tile adhesives and plastering mortars; and Roadscem soil-stabilization binders. Lafarge Africa also offers industrial waste co-processing and environmental solutions via its Geocycle platform, converting municipal and agricultural waste into alternative fuels for kiln energy generation. The company caters to individual homebuilders, artisans, real estate developers, industrial contractors, and government infrastructure agencies across Nigeria and regional Sub-Saharan African markets. Its production footprint includes integrated manufacturing plants and grinding stations in Ewekoro and Sagamu (Ogun State), Mfamosing (Cross River State), and Ashaka (Gombe State), supported by ready-mix batching plants and distribution depots across commercial centers such as Lagos, Abuja, Port Harcourt, and Ibadan. Founded in 1959 as the West African Portland Cement Company, Lafarge Africa is headquartered in Lagos, Nigeria, and is listed on the Nigerian Exchange. In recent major strategic developments, parent company Holcim agreed to sell its 83.81 percent equity stake in Lafarge Africa to China-based Huaxin Cement Co., Ltd. for an equity value of approximately 1 billion US dollars, transitioning the company into Huaxin Cement's international operations upon regulatory completion. Operationally, the company has accelerated its green growth and decarbonization agenda by increasing the thermal substitution rate at its kilns using biomass and refuse-derived fuels, commercializing low-carbon eco-label cement formulations, and deploying Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered distribution trucks across its logistics fleet to reduce emissions and optimize freight costs.
