Business
NatWest Group plc is a British banking and insurance holding company primarily focused on serving customers in the United Kingdom with operations extending internationally. The group offers a comprehensive range of products and services spanning retail, commercial, private, and institutional banking. Its core product portfolio includes current accounts; mortgages; personal unsecured lending; personal deposits; credit cards; overdrafts; home and life insurance; savings products; as well as asset and invoice finance. The group also provides corporate finance, investment banking, trade finance, international payments, risk management, and specialized sector expertise notably in sustainable energy, commercial property, and technology. NatWest Group delivers these services through key subsidiaries and brands, including NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Ulster Bank, NatWest Markets (investment banking), Coutts (private banking), and RBS International for offshore services. Founded in 1968 and headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland, NatWest Group operates predominantly in the UK and Ireland, with selective international exposure through its investment banking and offshore subsidiaries. The group serves more than 20 million customers across retail, commercial, corporate, and institutional market segments. Recent major developments include the full return to private ownership in May 2025 following the UK government's sale of its remaining shares, ending public ownership since the 2008 financial crisis. This change accelerates the group's strategic flexibility and capital allocation. The group has also been actively investing in technology and digital platform modernization, driving efficiencies and improved customer experience. Notably, in 2025 NatWest acquired balances from Sainsbury's Bank to expand its lending book. It has delivered strong financial performance with growth across all customer businesses, including significant climate and transition finance lending aligned with net zero goals. Operationally, the group has focused on cost savings and workforce reductions to support investment in innovation and simplification. Additionally, NatWest continues to advance its sustainable finance initiatives as part of its growth strategy. Overall, NatWest Group plc represents a diversified UK banking group with extensive retail and commercial banking products; sophisticated institutional and investment banking capabilities; and a commitment to innovation, sustainability, and private ownership strategic flexibility.
