Business
Oil India Limited Oil India Limited (OIL.NS) is an integrated upstream exploration and production company engaged in the discovery, development, and production of crude oil and natural gas; it also produces liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), operates extensive crude oil and product pipelines, and provides ancillary services including seismic data acquisition, drilling, reservoir management with improved and enhanced oil recovery techniques, and oilfield services. The company maintains a significant presence across the hydrocarbon value chain, with in-country operations spanning Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, and offshore areas in Andaman, Kerala-Konkan, and KG shallow waters; it holds participating interests in exploration blocks in Russia, Venezuela, Mozambique, Nigeria, Gabon, Bangladesh, and Libya. Founded in 1959 and headquartered in Duliajan, Assam, Oil India Limited operates over 2,000 kilometers of trunk and feeder pipelines, including a 1,157-kilometer crude oil pipeline in Northeast India serving major refineries such as Numaligarh, Guwahati, Bongaigaon, Barauni, and Digboi, as well as a 660-kilometer product pipeline from Numaligarh Refinery to Siliguri; it has diversified into city gas distribution, renewables with 188.10 MW capacity in wind and solar projects, and holds majority stake in Numaligarh Refinery Limited (NRL), a 3 million tonnes per annum refinery in Assam, alongside interests in Brahmaputra Cracker and Polymer Limited (BCPL). Recent developments include the acquisition of majority stake in NRL in March 2021, attainment of Maharatna status in August 2023, strategic memoranda of understanding signed in 2025 with Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) for a Rs 1 lakh crore greenfield refinery and petrochemical complex near Ramayapatnam Port in Andhra Pradesh with 9-12 million tonnes per annum capacity and a 1.5 million tonnes per annum ethylene cracker unit targeted for FY2030 operations, and a tripartite agreement with BPCL and NRL for a Rs 3,500 crore cross-country product evacuation pipeline from Siliguri to Mughalsarai to support NRL's expansion to 9 million tonnes per annum; additionally, the company plans to drill over 70 wells in FY2026, the highest ever, deploy advanced technologies for production augmentation, and advance Numaligarh Refinery expansion to 9 million tonnes alongside a polypropylene unit, while pursuing renewable energy and compressed biogas initiatives.
