Business
Samba Bank Limited is a scheduled commercial banking institution based in Pakistan that provides a comprehensive suite of retail, corporate, commercial, and investment banking products and services to individual consumers, small and medium-sized enterprises, corporate entities, and institutional clients. Incorporated in Pakistan in November 2002 (originally formed as Crescent Commercial Bank Limited through the amalgamation of Crescent Investment Bank Limited and the Pakistan operations of Mashreqbank, before officially rebranding to Samba Bank Limited in 2008), the institution operates as an 84.51%-owned subsidiary of The Saudi National Bank (SNB), the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia's largest banking group. The bank maintains its principal office in Karachi, its registered office in Islamabad, and conducts operations nationwide across Pakistan through a network of 65 branches connected to automated teller machine networks and electronic clearing systems. The bank organizes its operations into four primary business segments: Retail Banking, Corporate and Investment Banking, Commercial and SME Banking, and Global Markets and Treasury. Its core products and services encompass deposit and transaction accounts, including current accounts, savings accounts, basic banking accounts, and term deposit receipts; consumer credit facilities, including personal loans, auto finance, and residential mortgage financing; card and merchant payment solutions, including debit cards, credit cards, and point-of-sale services; wealth management and priority banking through its Samba Gold service platform; digital banking capabilities, including internet banking, mobile banking applications, electronic fund transfers, and bill payment services; corporate lending, including short-term working capital facilities, long-term project finance, syndicated loans, and structured finance; international trade finance solutions, including import and export letters of credit, documentary collections, bank guarantees, performance bonds, and export refinance schemes; cash management services, including centralized receivables, electronic bulk payments, and customized payroll processing; commercial and SME financing, including asset-backed lending, running finance, and term loans; and treasury and market services, including foreign exchange spot and forward trading, money market operations, government securities trading, liquidity management, interest rate risk management, and cross-border remittance services, including specialized remittances for Hajj and Umrah pilgrims. In recent corporate developments, Saudi National Bank engaged in strategic evaluations regarding its shareholding in Samba Bank Limited, receiving a non-binding offer from Najd Gateway Holding Company to acquire SNB's 84.51% controlling stake following the conclusion of earlier divestment talks with Bank Alfalah Limited in late 2024. Concurrently, the Board of Directors of Samba Bank Limited granted in-principle approval to undertake a comprehensive strategic transformation to convert the bank from a conventional commercial banking model into a full-fledged Islamic banking institution, while continuing to upgrade its digital banking platforms, core banking technology, and branch service delivery architecture.
