- REN - Redes Energéticas Nacionais, SGPS, S.A., through its various entities, undertakes the management of critical energy infrastructure across Portugal. Its operations are broadly structured into segments covering electricity, natural gas, and telecommunications. The company serves as the exclusive concessionaire for Portugal's national electricity transmission grid, overseeing its planning, construction, operation, and the overall technical supervision of the national electricity system. Additionally, it holds the concession for the national high-pressure natural gas transportation grid, performing similar functions for the comprehensive management of the gas system. The business scope also includes the reception, storage, and regasification of liquefied natural gas at the Sines terminal, alongside the management of natural gas underground storage facilities, notably at Carriço. Beyond its core energy transmission and storage roles, REN provides advanced telecommunications services through its subsidiary, REN Telecom. This leverages its extensive fiber optic network, originally established for electricity and gas transmission, to offer connectivity, data center services, and various telecommunications solutions to other utilities, telecom operators, and IT integration firms. Internationally, the group maintains a presence in Chile, where it is involved in electricity transmission through Transemel, further strengthened by the acquisition of Transmisora de Energía Nacimiento S.A. (TENSA) in April 2025. This expansion significantly increased its operational footprint in the Chilean electricity transmission sector to approximately 280 kilometers of lines and five substations. REN also holds an interest in Electrogas, which manages a crucial gas pipeline in central Chile, and a stake in Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa in Mozambique. The company has a strong commitment to facilitating Portugal's energy transition, reflected in the fact that renewable sources supplied 61% of the country's electricity consumption in 2023. Furthermore, REN has proposed substantial investments in its gas networks between 2024 and 2033, including projects designed to accommodate hydrogen mixtures. As of 2023, the national electricity transmission system spanned 9,409 kilometers of lines. The national natural gas transmission network extended across 1,375 kilometers of high-pressure pipelines, complemented by a fiber optic telecommunications network covering over 8,100 kilometers. Established in 1994, REN maintains its corporate headquarters in Lisbon, Portugal, employing approximately 800 individuals.
