Business
Hartford Multifactor US Equity ETF (ROUS) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to provide investment results, before fees and expenses, corresponding to the total return performance of the Hartford Multifactor Large Cap Index (LROLCX). The index targets U.S. large-cap equity securities selected through a rules-based methodology emphasizing value, momentum, and quality factors, with an optimization process designed to reduce volatility by up to 15% relative to the capitalization-weighted Russell 1000 Index over a complete market cycle; it incorporates lower valuations, lower volatility characteristics, and reduced concentrations beyond the largest companies and sectors for enhanced diversification. ROUS invests at least 80% of its assets in securities comprising the index or depositary receipts representing them, while the remainder may include cash equivalents or other instruments to facilitate index tracking; the fund typically holds 300-400 components from the 1,000 largest U.S. companies by free-float market capitalization, with semi-annual reconstitution and rebalancing in March and September. Managed by Hartford Funds as part of Lattice Strategies Trust, with Lattice Strategies LLC serving as investment adviser and Mellon Investments Corporation as sub-adviser, ROUS features a low expense ratio of 0.19%, quarterly distributions, and approximately $522-536 million in assets under management as of late 2025. The fund trades on NYSE Arca under ticker ROUS (CUSIP 518416409) and has demonstrated characteristics such as a 26% turnover rate, price-to-book of 4.4x, price-to-earnings of 20.1x, and a portfolio spanning sectors like information technology (32%), industrials (12%), and financials (12%), with top holdings including Seagate Technology, Alphabet, and Western Digital. Launched on February 25, 2015, and headquartered with Hartford Funds in Wayne, Pennsylvania, ROUS primarily serves U.S. institutional and retail investors seeking multifactor large-cap equity exposure with improved risk-adjusted returns. In September 2019, ROUS underwent a significant strategic shift by changing its principal investment objective and benchmark to the current Hartford Multifactor Large Cap Index, enhancing its focus on multifactor stock selection and risk controls, which has resulted in solid performance, including outperformance of the Russell 1000 Value Index and peers like iShares Russell 1000 Value ETF since the change. Hartford Funds, the broader sponsor with roots tracing to 1996 and operations in key U.S. financial centers, acquired Lattice Strategies in 2018 to bolster its ETF lineup, enabling the development and management of ROUS and related multifactor products. While sibling ETFs such as Hartford Multifactor Diversified International ETF (RODE) and Hartford Multifactor International Small Company ETF (ROIS) faced closure and liquidation in June 2025 amid lineup reviews, ROUS continues active operations with recent institutional interest from firms like NorthRock Partners, Wealth Enhancement Advisory Services, and Harbour Investments.
