- Medalist Partners Short Duration Fund - Investor Shares (SEMRX) is an open-end mutual fund that seeks a high level of current income consistent with preservation of capital by investing primarily in investment-grade, U.S. dollar-denominated debt securities of domestic entities; these include U.S. Treasuries, agency securities, mortgage-backed securities such as residential mortgage-backed securities, commercial mortgage-backed securities, agency mortgage-backed securities, non-agency mortgage-backed securities, and credit risk transfer securities, asset-backed securities, collateralized loan obligations, high-yield bonds, Rule 144A securities, U.S. government securities, municipal securities, zero coupon securities, money market securities, repurchase agreements, and up to 10% in other investment companies including exchange-traded funds. The Fund maintains a weighted average portfolio duration of up to three years, measured by effective duration, and may employ short sales primarily for hedging or income enhancement purposes. It operates in the ultrashort fixed income segment, targeting institutional and retail investors seeking low interest rate sensitivity and current yield.
The Fund, organized on March 28, 2014 as a series of Advisors Series Trust to succeed the Semper Short Duration Fund predecessor launched in 2010, is headquartered in the United States with nationwide investor accessibility through platforms like broker-dealers and financial intermediaries; minimum initial investments are $1,000,000 for Institutional Class (SEMIX) shares and $2,500 for Investor Class (SEMRX) shares, subject to lower thresholds on certain platforms.
In a major strategic transition approved by shareholders in 2023, Medalist Partners, L.P. replaced Semper Capital Management, L.P. as investment adviser following partnerships initiated in October 2022 (Services Agreement) and March 2023 (Sub-Advisory Agreement), with the full transition effective in the third quarter of 2023; this included Medalist Partners hiring key personnel such as Thomas Mandel, CFA (former Semper CIO and portfolio manager since inception), and adding Gregory Richter (CEO and Partner) as co-portfolio manager, while Vesta Marks ceased as portfolio manager. The Fund was renamed Medalist Partners Short Duration Fund upon the change, with no alterations to investment objectives, strategies, risks, or fee schedules (Investor Class net expense ratio of 0.86% after waivers); expense limitations capping total operating expenses remain in place through at least 2025. Medalist Partners Funds are distributed by Quasar Distributors, LLC.
