- Syn Mun Kong Insurance Public Company Limited (SMK.BK) is a Thailand-based provider of non-life insurance products that ceased operations following regulatory action. The company offers fire insurance; marine and transportation insurance; motor insurance; personal accident insurance; and miscellaneous insurance covering health, cancer, travel, and other risks, primarily targeting individual and corporate customers in Thailand. Founded in 1951 and headquartered in Bangkok, it operated solely within the domestic market through a network of agents, partnered repair shops, and hospitals. In July 2024, Thailand's Finance Minister revoked its non-life insurance license due to insolvency stemming from heavy COVID-19-related claims, leading to the appointment of the General Insurance Fund as liquidator and a 60-day claims registration period. The company was barred from issuing new policies in late 2023 after a bankruptcy court rejected its rehabilitation plan, and its shares were delisted from the Stock Exchange of Thailand on November 7, 2024, following business dissolution. Prior to closure, SMK explored a majority stake sale in 2021 involving potential bidders like Assicurazioni Generali and Liberty Mutual, though no transaction materialized.
