Business
Alpha Architect Merlyn.AI Tactical Growth and Income ETF (SNUG) is an exchange-traded fund that employs a passive management approach to track the performance, before fees and expenses, of the MAI Tactical Growth and Income Index. The ETF uses a proprietary computer algorithm to assess U.S. equity market conditions, determining whether markets are advancing (Bull indicator) or at elevated risk of decline (Bear indicator), and adjusts its portfolio allocation accordingly; during bull markets, it maintains a conservative target of approximately 30% equities (90% domestic, 10% international) and 70% bonds across sector, country, global/region, dividend, and bond ETFs, while shifting defensively in bear markets to up to 100% in treasuries, aggregate/long-term/corporate/high-yield bonds, gold, and broad U.S. equity ETFs. It operates as a fund-of-funds investing in a diversified basket of approximately eight ETFs selected via artificial intelligence-driven genetic algorithms, advanced signal processing, and noise reduction techniques developed by Merlyn.AI. Launched in February 2020 and listed on Nasdaq, the ETF was issued by EA Series Trust with Empowered Funds, LLC (dba ETF Architect) as investment adviser and Alpha Architect ETF Trust affiliation. In November 2022, due to insufficient assets under management (around $9 million at the time), the Board of Trustees approved its liquidation and closure effective November 23, 2022, with shareholders receiving cash distributions of approximately $22.04 per share. No relaunches, acquisitions, partnerships, or strategic revivals have occurred since the closure, and the ticker no longer supports active trading. The fund targeted conservative investors seeking tactical growth and income with AI-powered risk management across U.S. and global markets.
