Business
State Street Target Retirement 2040 Fund (SSCQX) is an open-end mutual fund managed by SSGA Funds Management, Inc., a subsidiary of State Street Global Advisors, that seeks capital growth and income over the long term for investors planning to retire around 2040. Launched on September 30, 2014, and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, the fund operates as a fund of funds, investing primarily in underlying mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) sponsored by the Adviser or its affiliates, including State Street Equity 500 Index II Portfolio, State Street Global All Cap Equity ex-U.S. Index Portfolio, State Street Aggregate Bond Index Portfolio, SPDR Portfolio Long Term Treasury ETF, State Street Small/Mid Cap Equity Index Portfolio, and SPDR Bloomberg High Yield Bond ETF; these holdings provide diversified exposure to U.S. and non-U.S. equities (approximately 77%), fixed income securities (approximately 23%), and short-term cash equivalents. The fund follows a predetermined glide path that systematically shifts its asset allocation toward more conservative mixes, emphasizing fixed income as the target date approaches, while managing risks such as shortfall, longevity, volatility, and inflation through disciplined rebalancing and broad asset class diversification. In April 2025, State Street Global Advisors launched the State Street Target Retirement IndexPlus Strategy, expanding its target-date fund offerings with a new series that combines traditional public market exposures managed by State Street with private market investments through a partnership with Apollo Global Management, Inc., targeting 90% public and 10% private allocations to enhance diversification for defined contribution plans. This innovation builds on the firm's oversight of over $200 billion in global target-date assets and reflects a strategic shift to incorporate private markets for retirement investors. The SSCQX Class K shares maintain a low net expense ratio of 0.09%, supported by contractual fee waivers through April 30, 2026, with total net assets exceeding $3.2 billion as of September 30, 2025.
