Sun Pharmaceutical Industries Limited (SUNPHARMA.BO) is India's largest pharmaceutical company and a leading global specialty generic manufacturer that develops, manufactures and markets a broad portfolio of branded generics, generics, specialty and complex products, over-the-counter (OTC) medications, antiretrovirals (ARVs) and active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) including intermediates; its offerings span diverse dosage forms such as tablets, capsules, injectables, inhalers, ointments, creams, liquids, nasal sprays, lyophilized injections and controlled-release formulations across therapeutic areas including neuro-psychiatry, cardiology, anti-infectives, diabetology, gastroenterology, oncology, dermatology, ophthalmology, nephrology, urology, respiratory, orthopaedics and nutritionals, with flagship OTC brands like Volini, Revital, Faringosept, Coldact and Chericof; the company operates 41 manufacturing facilities and supplies products to over 100 countries, maintaining strong positions in the US (No. 2 in generic dermatology), emerging markets including Brazil, Mexico, South Africa and key developed markets like Canada, Australia, Western Europe and Japan. Founded in 1983 by Dilip Shanghvi and headquartered in Mumbai, India, Sun Pharma generates global revenues of US$6.2 billion with over 43,000 employees and invests 6-8% annually in R&D through a team of more than 2,900 personnel focused on complex generics and differentiated innovations like liposomal drugs. In recent developments, the company acquired US-based Checkpoint Therapeutics for $355 million in March 2025 to expand its oncology and immunotherapy pipeline with the FDA-approved PD-L1 inhibitor Unloxcyt (cosibelimab-ipdl) for advanced cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma, bolstering its onco-dermatology portfolio; its US subsidiary Taro Pharma completed the acquisition of Canada's Antibe Therapeutics by March 2025 to enhance presence in novel therapeutics; and Sun Pharma finalized full ownership of Taro Pharma in 2025, consolidating its global dermatology capabilities.
