Business
Varta AG Varta AG manufactures and markets a comprehensive portfolio of batteries and energy storage solutions worldwide, operating primarily through its two core segments: Lithium-Ion Solutions & Microbatteries and Household Batteries; the company serves diverse applications including hearing aids, consumer electronics, medical devices, industrial tools, robotics, telecommunications, automotive uses, home energy storage, and commercial installations. In the Lithium-Ion Solutions & Microbatteries segment, Varta AG produces microbatteries in various electrochemical systems and sizes for hearing aids and automotive applications, Lithium-Ion CoinPower button cells offering high energy density for compact devices in entertainment and beyond, large lithium-ion round cells, and customized lithium-ion battery packs alongside standard solutions for medical technology, connectivity, and power tools; the Household Batteries segment encompasses primary and rechargeable batteries, special batteries, lights, power banks, cables, accessories, chargers, and energy storage systems such as the wall-mounted VARTA pulse neo for residential use and the VARTA flex storage for commercial applications with integrated inverters and intelligent energy management to optimize solar self-consumption. Founded in 1887 and headquartered in Ellwangen, Germany, Varta AG employs nearly 4,200 people across five production facilities in Europe and Asia, with sales operations in over 75 countries through centers in Asia, Europe, and the USA; key subsidiaries include VARTA Microbattery GmbH and VARTA Consumer Batteries GmbH & Co. KGaA, both based in Ellwangen. In recent major developments, Varta AG completed a comprehensive balance sheet restructuring and recapitalization in April 2025 via StaRUG proceedings, reducing debt to approximately EUR 230 million, securing long-term financing, and welcoming new indirect shareholders Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche Aktiengesellschaft and DDr. Michael Tojner through a EUR 60 million cash and non-cash capital increase plus EUR 60 million in new financing to support operational growth and investments; concurrently, Porsche AG acquired a majority stake in Varta's V4Drive Battery GmbH (rebranded V4Smart) in March 2025, integrating a new production plant in Nördlingen, Germany, for large-format lithium-ion cylindrical cells used in high-performance hybrid drives like the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS while planning expansion to other customers and growing the workforce to 375 by year-end.
