Vanguard Energy Index Fund ETF (VDE) is an exchange-traded fund that employs an indexing investment approach designed to track the performance of the MSCI US Investable Market Index (IMI)/Energy 25/50, comprising stocks of large-, mid-, and small-cap U.S. companies in the energy sector as classified under the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS); the fund holds approximately 114 stocks, with top holdings including Exxon Mobil Corp. (23%), Chevron Corp. (16%), ConocoPhillips (6%), Williams Companies Inc., EOG Resources Inc., Marathon Petroleum Corp., Phillips 66, Valero Energy Corp., Kinder Morgan Inc., and SLB Ltd., representing over 65% of assets; it provides broad exposure across energy sub-industries such as integrated oil and gas, exploration and production, refining and marketing, midstream transportation, and oilfield services. The fund, which is non-diversified and passively managed with a low expense ratio of 0.10%, targets investors seeking cost-effective access to the U.S. energy sector. Launched in September 2004 and domiciled in Malvern, Pennsylvania as part of The Vanguard Group, Inc., VDE manages approximately $9 billion in assets under management as of late 2025, with operations focused exclusively on U.S. equity markets. In early 2025, Vanguard implemented its largest round of fee cuts across funds, including passive strategies like VDE, at an estimated cost of $350 million, reinforcing its low-cost leadership; the firm also launched a separate division for advice and wealth management services and introduced over a dozen low-cost bond ETFs, signaling strategic expansion beyond traditional equity indexing; additionally, VDE has benefited from a bullish shift in U.S. energy policy under President Trump favoring increased oil and gas production, enhancing its performance outlook amid AI-driven power demands and energy resurgence trends.
