Business
Vanguard Health Care ETF (VHT) is an exchange-traded fund that seeks to track the performance of the MSCI US Investable Market Health Care 25/50 Index, comprising stocks of large-, mid-, and small-cap U.S. companies in the health care sector as classified under the Global Industry Classification Standard (GICS); it holds approximately 410 stocks, including top holdings such as Eli Lilly and Company (LLY, 10.82%), AbbVie Inc. (ABBV, 5.12%), Johnson & Johnson (JNJ, 5.02%), UnitedHealth Group Inc. (UNH, 4.14%), and Abbott Laboratories (ABT, 3.97%), with a total of 96.4% allocation to health care equities, supplemented by minimal cash equivalents. The fund employs a full replication indexing strategy, investing all or substantially all assets in index constituents to mirror their weightings, and features a low expense ratio of 0.09% with assets under management exceeding $20 billion. Launched on January 26, 2004, and managed by Vanguard Group headquartered in Malvern, Pennsylvania, VHT targets institutional and retail investors seeking diversified exposure to the U.S. health care industry, including pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, health care equipment, providers, and life sciences tools. In August 2025, Vanguard announced its intent to seek shareholder approval to change VHT's status from diversified to non-diversified, alongside the Vanguard Financials Index Fund, to enable more precise tracking of the benchmark index by allowing investments in securities at their exact index weights without diversification constraints; this proposal, if approved, represents a significant operational shift to enhance replication accuracy. The fund maintains a low turnover rate of 1% and operates exclusively on U.S. markets via NYSE Arca, with no reported recent partnerships, acquisitions, funding rounds, or new product launches specific to VHT, though Vanguard broadly expanded its active ETF lineup in late 2024 and 2025 with unrelated offerings like the Vanguard Wellington U.S. Value Active ETF. VHT serves as a core holding for sector-specific allocation in broader portfolios, benefiting from the health care sector's defensive qualities and innovation-driven growth.
