Business
Western Asset Core Plus Bond Fund Class IS (WAPSX) is an actively managed open-end mutual fund that seeks to maximize total return through a well-diversified core fixed-income portfolio of primarily high-quality securities, including limited exposure to opportunistic sectors such as high-yield credit, bank loans, emerging markets debt, and non-agency mortgage-backed securities; agency mortgage-backed securities; investment-grade credit; U.S. Treasuries; commercial mortgage-backed securities; collateralized loan obligations; asset-backed securities; and inflation-linked bonds. The fund invests at least 80% of its net assets in fixed-income securities of varying maturities under normal market conditions, employing a fundamental value-oriented philosophy that integrates top-down macroeconomic analysis with bottom-up research, benchmarked against the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Index, with an effective duration of approximately 6.37 years and monthly dividend distributions. Managed by Western Asset Management Company, a leading global fixed-income investment manager founded in 1971 and headquartered in Pasadena, California as a wholly owned subsidiary of Franklin Resources, Inc. (Franklin Templeton), the fund operates primarily in U.S. and international fixed-income markets, targeting institutional investors with a minimum initial investment of $1 million. As of late 2025, the fund maintains total net assets of approximately $4.11 billion across its share classes, with 1,213 holdings and top sector allocations including 27.51% in agency mortgage-backed securities, 26.80% in investment-grade credit, 9.37% in Treasuries, 7.98% in commercial mortgage-backed securities, and 4.59% in non-agency mortgage-backed securities, alongside modest exposures to emerging markets debt (approximately 3-4% combined government and corporate), high-yield credit (3.03%), and bank loans (2.26%). Recent portfolio performance reflects contributions from emerging markets exposure amid tightening credit spreads and falling EM local yields, offset by detractors in high-yield corporate bonds and bank loans during periods of market volatility driven by geopolitical events, tariff announcements, and U.S. fiscal concerns in 2025. The fund, part of Franklin Templeton's broader offerings following the 2020 acquisition of Legg Mason (Western Asset's prior parent), continues to emphasize robust risk management and team-based oversight without reported major structural changes, funding rounds, acquisitions, or new product launches in the past 1-2 years.
