Business
Western Digital Corporation is a global provider of data storage solutions, specializing in the development, manufacturing, and sale of hard disk drives (HDDs), solid-state drives (SSDs), and related storage products and services. The company's product portfolio includes HDDs for enterprise and consumer markets; high-performance PCIe Gen5 enterprise-class SSDs; flash memory cards such as SanDisk-branded UHS-I microSDUC and SDUC cards, including world-first capacities of 4TB microSDUC and 8TB SDUC cards; and advanced automotive-grade storage solutions such as the iNAND AT EU752 designed for advanced driver-assistance systems and autonomous driving. Western Digital serves hyperscalers, cloud providers, enterprises, and consumer markets worldwide. Founded in 1970, the company is headquartered in San Jose, California. Recent major developments include a strategic joint venture subsidy of up to 150 billion yen with Kioxia Corporation to enhance the production of next-generation 3D flash memory at their Japanese plants in Yokkaichi and Kitakami. Western Digital has announced plans to separate its HDD and Flash businesses into two independent, publicly traded companies to refine market-specific strategic focus. In 2024, the company launched industry-leading data center products including a 64TB enterprise SSD and the world's first 32TB ePMR SMR HDD, and introduced new high-capacity, high-performance flash-based consumer storage solutions capable of supporting advanced media workflows such as 4K and 8K video. Additionally, Western Digital expanded its ecosystem collaboration with new hardware offerings like the Ultrastar Data102 ORv3 JBOD and OpenFlex Data storage platforms. The company also established a far-reaching collaboration with Samsung Electronics to standardize and promote next-generation Zoned Storage technologies for enterprise and cloud applications. Western Digital operates across multiple segments including data center storage, consumer storage, and embedded solutions industries with significant geographic reach covering the Americas, Asia Pacific, Europe, and the Middle East. The company is a market leader in HDDs and occupies a prominent position in SSD and flash memory markets through branded products like SanDisk. It targets data-intensive applications, AI workloads, cloud infrastructure, consumer electronics, and automotive systems. With a workforce of approximately 40,000 employees, Western Digital continues to pioneer scalable, sustainable storage technologies designed to enable the next generation of data-driven innovation and content management worldwide.
