Business
Western Asset Short Duration Income ETF (WINC) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks current income and capital preservation by investing primarily in USD-denominated, short-term fixed income securities, including investment grade corporate bonds, high yield bonds, emerging market debt, and structured securities such as asset-backed and mortgage-backed instruments. The fund maintains an average effective duration of approximately two years through a top-down and bottom-up investment process that leverages global credit opportunities while managing risk. It trades on the NASDAQ exchange with a net expense ratio of 0.29% and provides monthly distributions. Launched on February 7, 2019, WINC is managed by a team from Franklin Templeton, including portfolio managers S. Kenneth Leech, Michael C. Buchanan, Ryan K. Brist, and others, under the Western Asset brand, which specializes in fixed-income strategies. Western Asset Management Company, founded in 1971 and headquartered in Pasadena, California, serves as the investment adviser and operates globally with offices across five continents, managing fixed-income portfolios for institutional and retail clients. The ETF targets investors seeking short-term bond exposure, with holdings diversified across U.S. and non-U.S. corporate bonds (approximately 70%), cash equivalents (24%), and smaller allocations to asset-backed securities and preferred stock. In a significant recent development, Franklin Templeton announced on May 22, 2025, the liquidation and dissolution of WINC, approved by the fund's board of trustees on May 21, 2025, with the process scheduled to complete on or about August 29, 2025. Trading on NASDAQ will halt prior to market open on August 23, 2025, with the last trading day on August 22, 2025, after which shares will be delisted and shareholders receive cash equal to net asset value, potentially triggering taxable gains or losses. Prior to this, the fund maintained assets under management of approximately $12.11 million and continued regular monthly distributions, such as $0.0933 per share declared in March 2024.
