Business
ABB Ltd is a global technology leader in electrification and automation, providing products, systems, and services that enable industries to improve performance, efficiency, and sustainability. The company operates through three primary business areas: Electrification, offering electrical distribution and management solutions including low- and medium-voltage switchgear, circuit breakers such as SACE Emax 3, wiring accessories, enclosures, EV charging infrastructure, modular substations, distribution automation, and KNX building automation systems; Motion, delivering motors, drives, mechanical power transmission components, and power conversion solutions for industrial applications; and Process Automation (formerly including robotics prior to recent divestment), encompassing integrated automation systems, control technologies, measurement and analytics instruments, marine propulsion like Azipod, turbochargers, and digital platforms such as ABB Ability and ABB Genix Industrial IoT and AI Suite. ABB serves utilities, industrial, transport, infrastructure, and building sectors worldwide, with operations in over 100 countries, approximately 110,000 employees, more than 170 manufacturing sites, and annual revenues of $32.9 billion. Headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland, ABB Ltd traces its origins to the 1988 merger of Sweden's ASEA (founded 1883) and Switzerland's Brown, Boveri & Cie (founded 1891). In recent strategic developments, ABB announced in October 2025 the divestiture of its Robotics & Discrete Automation division to SoftBank Group for $5.375 billion, enabling a sharper focus on electrification and automation core areas and providing firepower for future acquisitions; completed acquisitions of Gamesa Electric's power electronics business in December 2025 to bolster renewable energy inverters for wind, solar, and storage, Lumin for North American residential energy management, BrightLoop for off-highway and marine electrification, Födisch Group for emissions monitoring, and SEAM Group for U.S. electrification services; invested $110 million in U.S. manufacturing expansions across Virginia, Puerto Rico, North Carolina, and Mississippi to support data centers, grid modernization, and AI-driven power demands, creating nearly 200 jobs; and at its November 2025 Capital Markets Day, unveiled a new three-business-area structure with upgraded financial targets including 18-22% operational EBITA margins, >20% ROCE, and confirmed 5-7% organic revenue growth.
