- Emirates Telecommunications Group Company PJSC, commercially operating as e& and formerly known as Etisalat Group, is a multinational telecommunications and technology conglomerate headquartered in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. Founded in 1976 under UAE Federal Law as the first telecommunications provider in the country, the company provides telecommunications services, digital infrastructure, cloud computing, and consumer digital solutions to residential consumers, multinational enterprises, small and medium businesses, and government entities across the Middle East, Africa, Asia, and Central and Eastern Europe. The Emirates Investment Authority, the sovereign wealth fund of the United Arab Emirates federal government, holds the controlling majority stake in the company, whose equity shares are listed on the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange under the ticker symbol EAND. The company organizes business operations across five principal operating segments: e& UAE, e& international, e& enterprise, e& life, and e& capital. Across its core telecommunications divisions, the group provides fixed-line voice telephony and leased line services; prepaid and postpaid mobile voice and cellular data plans; fifth-generation and fourth-generation mobile network access; residential and enterprise fiber broadband internet connectivity; international carrier capacity, wholesale voice, and IP transit; and bundled multi-play subscriptions and digital home entertainment through the eLife IPTV and streaming platform. Through e& enterprise, the group offers business-to-business and public sector digital transformation services, including hybrid, private, and sovereign cloud infrastructure; managed cybersecurity, network defense, threat intelligence, and digital risk management; enterprise artificial intelligence platforms and automated workflow solutions; industrial Internet of Things connectivity, smart meter networks, and smart city infrastructure; customer relationship management and omnichannel communication systems; and data center colocation, hosting, and business continuity services. Through e& life, the company delivers consumer digital and financial technology applications, including the e& money digital wallet platform for peer-to-peer payments, bill settlements, and cross-border remittances; prepaid Mastercard debit products; merchant acquiring solutions; on-demand digital entertainment; and lifestyle rewards and coupon aggregation through the Smiles super-app. Through e& capital, the organization operates a corporate venture capital program that finances, supports, and scales high-growth enterprise software, artificial intelligence, and digital commerce startups. The group operates across more than 30 countries, managing a portfolio of major international operating subsidiaries and affiliates that includes Maroc Telecom in Morocco and eleven countries across West and Central Africa, Etisalat Egypt in Egypt, Etihad Etisalat (Mobily) in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited and Ufone in Pakistan, and e& PPF Telecom Group across Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia. In recent major corporate changes, the organization underwent an enterprise-wide brand transformation and corporate restructuring, transitioning its group-level identity from Etisalat Group to e& to accelerate its transformation into a global technology and investment conglomerate. Expanding its European footprint, the company finalized the acquisition of a controlling 50% plus one economic share in PPF Telecom Group assets spanning Bulgaria, Hungary, Serbia, and Slovakia for 2.15 billion euros to form e& PPF Telecom Group, followed by subsequent consolidation including acquiring the remaining equity interest in its Hungarian assets and acquiring Serbian broadband and pay-television operator SBB d.o.o. for 825 million euros. Within its enterprise division, e& enterprise acquired 100% of managed cloud services provider GlassHouse to enhance SAP capability and regional data center migration, as well as systems integrator Smartworld, which was reorganized into e& enterprise IoT and AI. In the consumer digital domain, the company acquired a 50.03% majority stake in the Careem super-app business through Careem Technologies for 400 million dollars to scale regional fintech, grocery, and local delivery services, later rebalancing ownership alongside Uber. In strategic industry alliances, the group co-founded the Global Telco AI Alliance alongside Deutsche Telekom, SK Telecom, Singtel, and SoftBank to develop telecommunications-specific large language models and multilingual artificial intelligence platforms, complemented by hyperscaler cloud partnerships with Microsoft and Amazon Web Services. Additionally, following a period as the primary shareholder in Vodafone Group Plc and holding a seat on its board of directors under a strategic partnership agreement, the company executed a strategic divestment of its 16.2% equity interest to optimize group capital allocation toward core geographic markets and priority digital assets.
