Business
AGL Energy Limited generates and retails electricity and natural gas to approximately 4.5 million residential, small-to-large business, wholesale and telecommunications customers across Australia; operates the country's largest electricity generation portfolio with 10,984 megawatts of capacity, including coal-fired stations such as Bayswater, Loy Yang A and Torrens Island, gas-fired plants like Barker Inlet, renewable assets encompassing hydro schemes (Kiewa, Dartmouth, Eildon), wind farms (Hallet, Wattle Point, Oaklands Hill) and solar facilities (Nyngan, Broken Hill), as well as natural gas storage (Newcastle, Silver Springs) and production; provides broadband, mobile and voice services following acquisitions like Southern Phone; and offers solar battery systems, energy efficiency solutions and virtual power plant technologies. Founded in 1837 and headquartered at 200 George Street in Sydney, New South Wales, the company serves the National Electricity Market across New South Wales, Queensland, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia through segments including Customer Markets for retail electricity, gas, solar and energy products; Integrated Energy for generation from coal, gas and renewables plus gas storage; and Investments. AGL maintains minority stakes in entities such as ActewAGL for electricity, gas and telecom in the Australian Capital Territory and southeast New South Wales, and a reduced position in Tilt Renewables following recent divestitures. In August 2024, AGL acquired battery storage developer Firm Power and solar/wind developer Terrain Solar for A$250 million, adding an 8.1-gigawatt pipeline of 6.1 gigawatts grid-scale batteries, 1.8 gigawatts solar and 250 megawatts onshore wind projects to accelerate its energy transition. In June 2024, AGL invested A$150 million for a 20% stake in energy software platform Kaluza to enhance customer experience via retail transformation, targeting A$70-90 million annual pre-tax cash savings from fiscal 2029 after migrating four million accounts. In November 2025, AGL divested 19.9% of its Tilt Renewables stake to QIC and Future Fund-led investors for A$750 million to recycle capital into battery storage and firming projects toward a 6-gigawatt target by fiscal 2030, while retaining partnership via power purchase agreements; earlier in 2025, it acquired Tesla's South Australia virtual power plant for residential battery networks and announced workforce reductions amid a A$20 billion commitment for 12 gigawatts new solar, wind and batteries by 2035 alongside coal station closures including Liddell in 2023.
