Business
Alon USA Energy, Inc. (ALJ) is an independent refiner and marketer of petroleum products operating primarily in the South Central, Southwestern, and Western regions of the United States. The company refines and markets a range of petroleum products through its three principal segments: Refining and Marketing, Asphalt, and Retail; the Refining and Marketing segment processes sour crude oil at its Big Spring, Texas refinery (73,000 barrels per day throughput capacity), light sweet crude at its Krotz Springs, Louisiana facility (74,000 barrels per day), and heavy crude at refineries in Paramount, Bakersfield, and Long Beach, California, producing gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, petrochemical feedstocks, asphalt, and other petroleum-based products; the Asphalt segment manufactures and markets asphalt and roofing flux; while the Retail segment operates branded convenience stores and retail fuel stations, including as the largest 7-Eleven licensee in the U.S. with approximately 300 c-stores in central and west Texas and New Mexico. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Dallas, Texas, Alon USA targets wholesale, branded retail, and industrial customers across its key U.S. regions. In July 2017, Delek US Holdings, Inc. completed the acquisition of the remaining outstanding shares of Alon USA Energy, Inc., integrating its refining, logistics, retail, and marketing operations to create a Permian Basin-focused platform with expected annual synergies of $85 million to $105 million and enhanced crude sourcing economies. Post-acquisition, Alon USA's assets, including the Big Spring refinery and retail network, have been incorporated into Delek US's downstream operations, with references to Alon persisting in Delek's financial disclosures as late as June 30, 2025; no major new partnerships, funding rounds, product launches, or reorganizations specific to Alon USA have been announced in the last 1-2 years. The combined entity benefits from Delek's balance sheet strength and potential logistics dropdowns to Delek Logistics Partners, LP, unlocking additional value from Alon's infrastructure.
