Business
Alexion Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (ALXN), a biopharmaceutical company founded in 1992 and headquartered in Boston, Massachusetts, develops and commercializes innovative therapies for patients with rare diseases through its complement biology platform and enzyme replacement technologies; its marketed products include Soliris (eculizumab) and Ultomiris (ravulizumab), long-acting C5 complement inhibitors for paroxysmal nocturnal hemoglobinuria, atypical hemolytic uremic syndrome, generalized myasthenia gravis, and neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder; Strensiq (asfotase alfa) for hypophosphatasia; Kanuma (sebelipase alfa) for lysosomal acid lipase deficiency; Koselugo (selumetinib), a kinase inhibitor; and Andexxa (andexanet alfa), a Factor Xa inhibitor reversal agent. The company operates globally across hematology, nephrology, neurology, metabolics, cardiology, and emerging areas such as ophthalmology and bone metabolism, serving patients and healthcare providers in major markets including the United States, Europe, Japan, and other regions through its integration as Alexion, AstraZeneca Rare Disease. Alexion maintains a robust pipeline of over 15 investigational therapies, including Ultomiris expansions into immunoglobulin A nephropathy, lupus nephritis, and hematopoietic stem cell transplant-associated thrombotic microangiopathy; next-generation enzyme replacements like efzimfotase alfa (ALXN1850) and ALXN1910 for hypophosphatasia; oral factor D inhibitors danicopan and vemircopan; gefurulimab for generalized myasthenia gravis; and ALXN2220, under exclusive global license with Neurimmune AG for transthyretin amyloid cardiomyopathy. Following its acquisition by AstraZeneca in 2021 for $39 billion, Alexion leverages AstraZeneca's global infrastructure for expanded commercialization and pipeline acceleration, including an exclusive worldwide license agreement in 2024 with Monopar Therapeutics for ALXN-1840 (bis-choline tetrathiomolybdate) in Wilson disease; however, AstraZeneca discontinued two Alexion rare disease assets in early 2025 due to efficacy shortfalls.
