- Allspring Ultra Short Municipal ETF (AUSM) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks current income exempt from federal income tax, consistent with capital preservation, by investing principally in short-term municipal securities of U.S. states, territories, and possessions whose interest is generally exempt from federal income tax, though not necessarily the federal alternative minimum tax. Under normal circumstances, the fund allocates at least 80% of its net assets plus borrowings for investment purposes to such municipal securities; up to 20% of total assets to securities subject to federal AMT; and up to 10% to below investment-grade municipal securities, with a dollar-weighted average effective maturity expected to be one year or less. It employs a relative value approach through top-down macroeconomic analysis for duration management, yield curve positioning, sector and credit allocation, and bottom-up credit research for security selection, supplemented by the potential use of futures contracts; the fund is listed on NYSE Arca with a net expense ratio of 0.18% and monthly dividend distributions.
Launched on July 8, 2025, as part of a trio of actively managed ETFs introduced by Allspring Global Investments—a global asset manager with approximately $600 billion in assets under advisement—the fund is managed by Allspring Funds Management, LLC, with sub-advisory from Allspring Global Investments, LLC, and a portfolio management team comprising Bruce R. Johns, James Randazzo, and Nicholos Venditti, all since 2025.
The fund targets investors seeking tax-efficient, low-duration fixed income alternatives, such as cash proxies offering potentially higher after-tax yields than taxable short-term options amid concerns over declining short-term rates; it operates within the short municipal debt category, benchmarked against the Ultra Short-Term Municipal Income Blended Index, with holdings including high-credit-quality issues like hospital facilities revenue bonds, navigation district environmental facilities revenue bonds, school district bonds, and water finance authority securities. Headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina, Allspring Global Investments oversees the ETF alongside its growing suite of active ETFs, which expanded with prior launches including the Allspring Core Plus ETF (APLU), Allspring Income Plus ETF (AINP), and others since late 2024. As a new fund with limited operating history, AUSM maintains a small asset base of around $26 million and 1 million shares outstanding as of mid-2025, trading at approximately $25 per share with low daily volume.
