Business
Avalon Advanced Materials Inc. engages in the acquisition, exploration, evaluation, and development of specialty and critical minerals properties in Canada. The company primarily focuses on lithium, cesium, tantalum, rare earth elements, tin, indium, gallium, germanium, yttrium, and zirconium deposits. Its flagship project is the 100% owned Separation Rapids Lithium Project located near Kenora, Ontario, covering approximately 4,414 hectares, alongside other projects including the Lilypad cesium-tantalum deposit and the Snowbank lithium deposit. Avalon is also developing Ontario's first midstream lithium hydroxide processing facility in Thunder Bay, aiming to create a domestic supply chain to support electric vehicle battery manufacturing and the global glass-ceramics industry. Additional operations include exploration activities at the Nechalacho rare earths and zirconium project in the Northwest Territories as well as the East Kemptville tin-indium project and Warren Township anorthosite project. Recent major changes include the establishment of a joint venture with SCR-Sibelco NV, a global materials solutions leader, which invests €35 million to develop lithium mining and processing operations at the Separation Rapids and Lilypad projects. Avalon entered into a $15 million convertible security funding agreement in March 2025 to accelerate development of its lithium processing facility, followed by a brokered private placement financing of up to C$21 million announced in October 2025. In 2024, Avalon signed a memorandum of understanding with Qualcomm Technologies to enhance mining innovation and operational efficiency for its Thunder Bay lithium processing plant through IoT-enabled solutions. These strategic partnerships and investments support Avalon’s objective to vertically integrate the Ontario lithium supply chain and establish itself as a critical supplier of battery-grade lithium hydroxide in North America. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, Avalon operates exclusively in Canada, targeting critical minerals essential for advanced technologies, energy storage, and sustainable development. The company’s operations emphasize environmental stewardship and social responsibility while addressing growing demand in the electric vehicle, energy storage, and technology sectors. Avalon’s portfolio and vertical integration strategy position it as a key player in the supply and processing of critical minerals in North America, with a focus on lithium extraction, refining, and downstream battery materials production to support the regional and global clean energy transition.
