AstraZeneca PLC (AZN.L), a British-Swedish multinational biopharmaceutical company headquartered in Cambridge, United Kingdom, and founded in 1999 through the merger of Sweden's Astra AB and the UK's Zeneca Group PLC, discovers, develops, manufactures and commercializes prescription medicines across three core therapy areas: Oncology; BioPharmaceuticals, including Cardiovascular, Renal & Metabolism (CVRM) products such as Farxiga (dapagliflozin) for heart failure, chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes, Lokelma (sodium zirconium cyclosilicate) for hyperkalaemia, and Brilinta (ticagrelor) for cardiovascular disease, as well as Respiratory & Immunology offerings including Symbicort (budesonide/formoterol), Breztri (budesonide/glycopyrronium/formoterol), Fasenra (benralizumab) for severe eosinophilic asthma and EGPA, Saphnelo (anifrolumab) for systemic lupus erythematosus, and Pulmicort (budesonide); Rare Disease and BioPharmaceuticals treatments; and Vaccines & Immune Therapies; with key Oncology brands encompassing Tagrisso (osimertinib) for EGFR-mutant non-small cell lung cancer, Imfinzi (durvalumab) for bladder cancer, lung cancer and gastric cancers, Lynparza (olaparib) as a PARP inhibitor across ovarian, breast, prostate and pancreatic cancers, Enhertu (trastuzumab deruxtecan) for HER2-positive breast, gastric and other cancers, and Calquence (acalabrutinib) for haematological malignancies. The company conducts R&D at major sites in Cambridge (UK), Gaithersburg (Maryland, US), Gothenburg (Sweden) and Warsaw (Poland), operates sales in over 130 countries with more than 80,000 employees worldwide, and maintains manufacturing facilities across the US, Europe and other regions. Recent developments include the acquisition of Belgian biotech EsoBiotec for up to $1 billion in March 2025 to advance in vivo cell therapy platform ENaBL for cancer treatments; exercise of an option to acquire obesity-focused startup SixPeaks Bio AG in October 2025; completion of the acquisition of Amolyt Pharma for $1.05 billion to bolster rare endocrine disease pipeline; a licensing deal with Algen Biotechnologies in October 2025 worth up to $555 million for AI-identified gene therapies targeting immune disorders; a collaboration with Alteogen for subcutaneous oncology formulations using Hybrozyme technology; significant US manufacturing expansions such as a $445 million facility upgrade in Coppell, Texas, to double Lokelma production, a new $4.5 billion API plant in Virginia, and a $2 billion investment in Maryland for biologics and clinical production; alongside positive clinical trial readouts for Enhertu in breast cancer, Imfinzi in bladder and gastric cancers, baxdrostat in hypertension, Breztri in asthma, and Fasenra in hypereosinophilic syndrome, with plans for at least 15 new drug launches by 2030.
