- Baron Global Opportunity Fund Retail Shares (BGAFX) is an actively managed open-end mutual fund that seeks long-term capital appreciation by investing primarily in equity securities, including common stock, of established and emerging growth companies located throughout the world, with a focus on those demonstrating superior growth rates, attractive valuation characteristics, and sustainable competitive advantages. The fund's portfolio is concentrated in high-conviction positions across sectors such as information technology (semiconductors, systems software), consumer discretionary (broadline retail, restaurants), industrials (aerospace and defense), financials (consumer finance, transaction processing), and health care (biotechnology, life sciences tools); top holdings as of late 2025 include Space Exploration Technologies Corp., NVIDIA Corp., MercadoLibre Inc., Shopify Inc., and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Ltd., representing approximately 59% of net assets, with roughly 45% allocated to U.S. equities, 48% to non-U.S. equities, and the remainder in cash equivalents. Managed by Alex Umansky since inception, the fund targets institutional and retail investors through share classes including Retail (BGAFX, minimum initial investment $2,000), Institutional (BGAIX), and others, with a net expense ratio of 1.16% for Retail Shares and net assets under management of approximately $666 million as of September 30, 2025.
Launched on April 30, 2012, and headquartered in New York with Baron Capital Group, Inc. as investment adviser, the fund recently underwent a name change from Baron Global Advantage Fund to Baron Global Opportunity Fund in December 2025, coinciding with Baron Capital's launch of active ETFs including the Baron Global Durable Advantage ETF (NYSE: BCGD), managed by Umansky and others, extending the durable advantage strategy globally.
In the past 1-2 years, the fund has pursued an active portfolio strategy, initiating new positions in cybersecurity provider Netskope, AI-powered med-tech firm Heartflow, collaborative design platform Figma (Q3 2025), Latin American digital bank Nu Holdings, and aerospace components supplier Loar Holdings (Q2 2025); cyber-security software provider SailPoint (Q1 2025); adding to holdings such as Taiwan Semiconductor, Shopify, NVIDIA, MercadoLibre, and Tesla amid AI-driven market opportunities; trimming or exiting positions including Globant, Endava, and others to reallocate capital; and maintaining low turnover of 6.99% (3-year average) with 42 issuers comprising 98.9% of net assets.
