Business
Aberdeen Total Return Bond Fund Class A (BJBGX) is a mutual fund that seeks to maximize long-term total return through investment primarily in fixed-income securities, including government and corporate bonds, mortgage-related and asset-backed securities, inflation-indexed securities, variable and floating-rate instruments, preferred stock, loan participations and assignments; it may invest up to 25% of net assets in below investment grade bonds, without limit in U.S. dollar-denominated foreign fixed-income securities, and up to 25% in non-U.S. dollar-denominated foreign securities from developed and emerging markets; the fund employs derivatives such as options, futures, forwards and swaps, and uses leverage techniques including reverse repurchase agreements and dollar rolls. The fund, part of Aberdeen Investment Funds and advised by Aberdeen Asset Management Inc. (now under abrdn branding), targets intermediate core bond strategies with a focus on risk-adjusted yields across short- to long-term maturities, serving retail and institutional investors seeking income and capital appreciation; it operates globally with exposure to U.S., developed and emerging markets debt. Founded through Aberdeen's U.S. operations established in the early 2000s and headquartered at 1735 Market Street, 32nd Floor, Philadelphia, PA, the fund has navigated multiple firm transitions including from Julius Baer and Artio Global. In recent major changes, the fund's portfolio management team, including key personnel like Lynn Chen, transitioned to American Century Investments in 2021, while the strategy persisted under abrdn; most notably, on November 5-7, 2024, the Board approved its reorganization into AB Core Plus Bond ETF (a series of AB Active ETFs, Inc., managed by AllianceBernstein L.P.), with Class A shares (BJBGX) converting to Advisor Class shares on January 13, 2025, asset transfer expected around February 7, 2025, followed by fund liquidation; this structural shift from mutual fund to ETF aims to enhance liquidity and operational efficiency, with purchases halted after January 31, 2025, and redemptions through February 6, 2025; concurrently, abrdn pursued broader strategic realignments, including acquiring management of £1.5 billion in closed-end funds from MFS in December 2025 and selling non-core private equity units.
