Business
Eaton Vance Total Return Bond ETF (EVTR) is an actively managed exchange-traded fund that seeks total return through investment in a diversified portfolio of fixed-income securities, including investment-grade corporate bonds, mortgage-backed securities, U.S. Treasuries, asset-backed securities, high-yield bonds, commercial mortgage-backed securities, collateralized loan obligations, municipal securities, U.S. government securities and related derivatives; it benchmarks performance against the Bloomberg U.S. Aggregate Bond Index and distributes income monthly with a net expense ratio of 0.32%. The fund, with total net assets of approximately $3.6 billion as of October 2025, operates primarily in U.S. dollar-denominated markets and trades on the NYSE under CUSIP 61774R841. Managed by a team from Morgan Stanley Investment Management's Broad Markets Fixed Income group, including portfolio managers Matthew C. Dunning (since 2014), Brian S. Ellis and Vishal Khanduja (since 2023) and Brandon Matsui (since 2024), it emphasizes a multi-sector top-down/bottom-up approach with an effective duration of around 5.83 years and holdings in sectors such as MBS (31.63%), Treasuries (31.07%) and investment-grade credit (20.06%). Originally launched as a mutual fund on November 14, 1984, EVTR converted to an ETF structure on March 25, 2024, as part of Morgan Stanley Investment Management's expansion of its active ETF lineup from mutual fund conversions, alongside the Eaton Vance Short Duration Municipal Income ETF (EVSM). This strategic shift enhances liquidity, tax efficiency and intraday trading for investors seeking core-plus fixed-income exposure with opportunistic higher-yielding allocations. Eaton Vance, the fund's branding originates from the firm acquired by Morgan Stanley in March 2021 for approximately $7 billion, now integrates within Morgan Stanley Investment Management, which advises the fund and oversees a broader platform of Eaton Vance-branded ETFs. The ETF maintains the predecessor mutual fund's long-term track record, reflecting annualized returns of 6.37% since inception through October 2025, with strong Morningstar ratings including 5 stars for 3- and 10-year periods.
