- Avioane Craiova SA is a Romania-based aerospace and defense company primarily engaged in the design, development, manufacturing, modernization, and maintenance of military aircraft, aero-structures, and related aeronautical systems. Founded in 1972 and headquartered in Ghercesti, Dolj County, Romania, the company operates under majority state ownership administered by the Romanian Ministry of Economy and serves government defense entities, notably the Romanian Air Force, alongside international aerospace prime contractors and tier-one suppliers. The company operates through integrated engineering, manufacturing, maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO), and aerostructure fabrication units. Its comprehensive portfolio of core products and services encompasses the design, production, and assembly of advanced jet trainer and light ground-attack aircraft, notably the IAR-99 platform; depot-level maintenance, repair, overhaul, and life-extension programs for military jet aircraft; structural aircraft upgrades and avionics integration; manufacturing of precision metallic and composite aerostructures, including fuselage sections, wing assemblies, control surfaces, and structural fairings; precision CNC machining, sheet metal forming, certified welding, heat treatments, and chemical surface protection; fabrication and testing of aeronautical electrical harnesses; and the design and manufacturing of ground support equipment and specialized aviation test benches. In recent developments, Avioane Craiova is executing a major modernization program with the Romanian Ministry of National Defence to upgrade the Romanian Air Force fleet to the IAR-99 SM (Standard Modernizat) configuration in partnership with Elbit Systems. The upgraded aircraft features advanced glass-cockpit avionics, modern navigation and tactical communication suites, and embedded virtual simulation capabilities designed to support advanced pilot transition training for 4th- and 5th-generation fighter platforms, including the F-16 and F-35. Furthermore, the company has advanced the technical upgrade of its manufacturing infrastructure through targeted investments in high-precision tooling and digital production capabilities to expand its participation in European defense programs and international aerostructure subcontracting supply chains.
