- S.P.E.E.H. Hidroelectrica S.A. is a Romania-based renewable energy utility engaged in the generation, trading, and supply of electricity, as well as the provision of system ancillary services for the national power grid. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, the company operates as the largest power producer in Romania and one of the principal hydropower producers in Southeastern Europe, with the Romanian State holding a majority ownership stake through the Ministry of Energy.
The company operates through three principal business segments: Electricity Generation, Electricity Supply, and Ancillary Services. Its comprehensive portfolio of products and services includes: hydroelectric power generation through a nationwide asset base of more than 180 run-of-river, storage, and pumped-storage power plants representing an aggregate installed capacity of over 6.3 gigawatts; onshore wind power generation via the 108-megawatt Crucea Wind Farm; solar photovoltaic energy generation; grid balancing and ancillary services delivered to the transmission system operator, including secondary frequency control, fast and slow tertiary reserves, reactive power and voltage regulation, spinning reserves, and black-start system restoration; wholesale electricity trading on centralized exchanges, bilateral platforms, and day-ahead and intra-day markets; retail electricity supply catering to residential, small-and-medium enterprise, commercial, and large industrial end-users; and water resource management services, comprising flood mitigation, reservoir administration, and industrial raw water delivery.
In recent developments, Hidroelectrica completed a landmark initial public offering on the Bucharest Stock Exchange under the ticker H2O, representing the largest public listing in Romanian capital markets history. Strategically expanding beyond traditional hydro assets, the company entered into a joint venture partnership with Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar) to co-develop utility-scale ground-mounted and floating solar photovoltaic projects, onshore and offshore wind farms, and battery energy storage systems (BESS). Concurrently, the company advanced its extensive fleet modernization program by awarding major refurbishment contracts for key infrastructure assets, including the Vidraru hydropower development, expanding its direct-to-consumer retail supply infrastructure, deploying nationwide electric vehicle charging solutions, and initiating engineering studies for green hydrogen production.
