Societatea Nationala Nuclearelectrica S.A. is a Romania-based nuclear power generation and fuel manufacturing company primarily engaged in the production of electricity and thermal energy, as well as the manufacturing and processing of nuclear fuel bundles. Founded in 1998 following the restructuring of the national power authority RENEL, the company is headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, and operates as a state-controlled enterprise majority-owned by the Romanian State through the Ministry of Energy, with its shares publicly traded on the Bucharest Stock Exchange under the ticker SNN. The company operates through two core operational branches and several specialized subsidiaries: the Cernavoda Nuclear Power Plant branch, which operates two 700-megawatt CANDU-6 pressurized heavy water reactor units providing approximately 20 percent of Romania national electricity demand; the Nuclear Fuel Plant (FCN Pitesti) branch in Mioveni, the sole authorized CANDU-6 fuel manufacturer in Europe supplying 100 percent of the fuel requirements for Cernavoda; Energonuclear S.A., dedicated to the development of Cernavoda Units 3 and 4; RoPower Nuclear S.A., a project development company established for small modular reactor deployment; Nuclearelectrica SERV S.R.L., providing specialized industrial maintenance and auxiliary support services; and the Feldioara processing subsidiary, managing uranium technical concentrate processing to maintain an integrated domestic nuclear fuel cycle. The company core offerings and capabilities comprise baseload nuclear electrical power generation delivered to the national transmission grid; district heating and thermal energy distribution to the municipality of Cernavoda; natural uranium dioxide CANDU fuel bundle manufacturing; uranium octoxide processing and refining services; specialized engineering consultancy, commissioning, quality inspection, and technical assistance for nuclear power installations; and nuclear environmental monitoring, radioprotection, and laboratory analysis services. In recent strategic developments, Nuclearelectrica entered into an Engineering, Procurement, and Construction Management contract with the FCSA consortium comprising Fluor, AtkinsRealis, Sargent & Lundy, and Ansaldo Nucleare to complete and commercialize Cernavoda Units 3 and 4, supported by international export credit agency financing. The company also advanced the comprehensive refurbishment project for Cernavoda Unit 1 to extend its operational lifespan by 30 years beyond 2029 in partnership with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and AtkinsRealis. Furthermore, shareholders approved the Final Investment Decision for the deployment of a NuScale VOYGR Small Modular Reactor facility in Doicesti through its joint venture RoPower Nuclear alongside Nova Power & Gas and Fluor. Nuclearelectrica is also executing the construction of a commercial Tritium Removal Facility at the Cernavoda site in partnership with Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and has entered into a strategic collaboration with Framatome to establish industrial infrastructure for the production of medical radioisotopes, specifically Lutetium-177, at its nuclear reactor facilities.
