- Unión de Cervecerías Peruanas Backus y Johnston S.A.A. is a Peru-based beverage manufacturing and distribution company primarily engaged in the production, bottling, commercialization, and distribution of beers, non-alcoholic malt beverages, carbonated soft drinks, ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages, and bottled mineral waters. Founded in 1879 and headquartered in Lima, Peru, the company operates as a key operating subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV (AB InBev).
The company organizes its product offerings across several core beverage categories: mainstream and regional beers, including Cristal, Pilsen Callao, Pilsen Trujillo, Arequipeña, and San Juan; premium and super-premium beers, encompassing Cusqueña (Dorada, Negra, Trigo, and Doble Malta), Stella Artois, Corona Extra, Budweiser, and Michelob Ultra; non-alcoholic and zero-alcohol beverages, such as Cusqueña Trigo Cero Alcohol, Corona Cero, and Maltin Power; flavored and ready-to-drink (RTD) alcoholic beverages, including Flying Fish and Mike's Hard Lemonade; carbonated soft drinks, consisting of Guaraná Backus and Viva Backus; and bottled mineral and purified waters under the San Mateo brand. In addition to finished beverages, the company operates industrial malting facilities, provides commercial bottling and packaging services, and manages direct logistics and ground transport operations through subsidiaries such as Transportes 77 S.A.
Backus distributes its products across all regions of Peru and selects international export markets, targeting commercial clients across modern retail supermarkets, traditional retail bodegas, wholesale distributors, and the hospitality and catering (HORECA) channel. Its manufacturing infrastructure includes primary production breweries and malting facilities located in Ate (Lima), Motupe (Lambayeque), Arequipa, Cusco, and Pucallpa (via Cervecería San Juan S.A.).
In recent operational and strategic developments, Backus has expanded its zero-alcohol and Beyond Beer offerings with the roll-out of Cusqueña Trigo Cero Alcohol—the first locally produced non-alcoholic wheat beer in the Peruvian market—alongside Corona Cero and the launch of the lime-flavored beer brand Flying Fish. The company has significantly advanced its digital transformation through the scaled adoption of the B2B e-commerce platform BEES, which now serves the majority of its traditional merchant network with automated ordering, customized credit solutions, and loyalty incentive programs. Furthermore, Backus transitioned 100% of its brewery electricity consumption to certified renewable energy sources, while executing continuous capital investments to expand production capacity and modernize packaging lines at its Motupe and Ate plants, alongside advancing sustainable supply-chain initiatives through its 100+ Accelerator innovation program.
