Business
Clarent Corporation historically offered software-centric communication platforms designed for Internet Protocol (IP) networks. Its specialized solutions allowed service providers to facilitate the concurrent delivery of voice, fax, and data across these IP infrastructures. The company's technology acted as an intermediary, bridging conventional circuit-switched telephone systems with IP networks, thus enabling IP telephony to function seamlessly for end-users utilizing their existing wired or wireless devices. Incorporated in 1996 and initially known as NetiPhone before adopting the Clarent Corporation name in May 1997, the company operated from Redwood City, California, with a global presence through offices in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America. Clarent served a client base that included service providers, system integrators, resellers, and various enterprises. The company faced significant challenges, including financial accounting fraud charges against its former CEO for allegedly inflating revenue and improper financial transactions. This led to its ultimate financial distress. On December 13, 2002, Clarent Corporation formally initiated Chapter 11 reorganization proceedings in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of California. A subsequent plan for Chapter 11 liquidation received approval on April 1, 2004. The company's business assets were largely sold within sixty days of commencing the bankruptcy case. Clarent Corporation remains in liquidation as of the current date.
