Business
Cibus, Inc. (Nasdaq: CBUS), formerly Calyxt, Inc., is an agricultural biotechnology company that develops and licenses gene-edited plant traits using proprietary gene editing technologies, such as its Trait Machine and Rapid Trait Development System (RTDS), to enhance farming productivity and produce renewable low-carbon plant products. The company offers productivity traits enabling higher crop yields and reduced use of crop protection chemicals and fertilizers; sustainable ingredients replacing fossil fuel-based alternatives; and gene-edited traits including herbicide tolerance, disease resistance, pod shatter reduction, and nematode resistance for crops such as rice, canola, soybean, and wheat. It operates primarily in the United States with partnerships extending to Latin America and India, and is headquartered in San Diego, California, following its founding in 2001. Cibus targets seed companies and agricultural partners through licensing agreements for royalties on commercialized traits, with products in development including herbicide-tolerant rice for 2027 commercial launch, pod shatter reduction and disease resistance in canola, and disease and nematode resistance in soybeans. The BioFactory production system supports synthetic biology solutions for cosmeceutical, nutraceutical, and pharmaceutical end markets, alongside selective customer projects in traditional agriculture. In June 2023, Calyxt merged with Cibus Global LLC in an all-stock transaction, rebranding as Cibus, Inc. and shifting ticker from CLXT to CBUS, with Cibus management assuming leadership to consolidate expertise in precision gene editing for agriculture. Recent developments include a July 2025 restructuring to prioritize rice traits, sustainable ingredients, and biofragrance products amid cost reductions; October 2025 collaborations with AgVayā for Indian rice growers and Semillano for Latin American trait expansion targeting 2027-2030 launches; and November 2025 election of Craig Wichner to the board to support shareholder value and growth.
