- Sanasa Development Bank PLC (doing business as SDB bank) is a Sri Lanka-based licensed specialized development bank that provides micro, small, and medium-sized enterprise (MSME), retail, cooperative, and corporate banking solutions. Founded in 1997 and headquartered in Colombo, Sri Lanka, the bank functions as the apex financial institution supporting the nationwide SANASA Thrift and Credit Cooperative Societies network while serving the broader commercial market. The bank organizes its operations into four primary business segments: Banking, Leasing, Treasury, and Pawning. Its comprehensive product and service portfolio includes deposit products comprising standard savings accounts, high-yield fixed deposits, children's savings, and senior citizen accounts; credit facilities comprising microfinance loans, MSME business expansion loans, agricultural and value-chain credit, home loans, personal loans, revolving working capital facilities, refinancing schemes, and cooperative society liquidity and infrastructure facilities; asset financing comprising vehicle, machinery, and equipment leasing; collateral-backed financing comprising gold loans and pawning services; treasury operations comprising foreign currency exchange, liquidity management, and government securities trading; and international payment services comprising inward remittance processing. The bank also offers digital transaction channels, including internet banking, the SDB Mobile banking application, and the UPay digital lifestyle and merchant payment platform. SDB bank operates across Sri Lanka through a physical network of 94 branches alongside automated teller machines and digital agent channels, serving rural farmers, female entrepreneurs, cooperative members, small business owners, and retail clients. In recent strategic developments, SDB bank has focused on sustainable value-chain financing, digital transformation, and balance sheet resilience. The bank formed a partnership with the Australian Government-funded Market Development Facility (MDF) to expand access to finance, market intelligence, and advisory services for smallholders and agri-entrepreneurs in high-potential agricultural sectors, including coconut, coffee, and mango. Furthermore, the bank engaged in a technical assistance collaboration with the Belgian Investment Company for Developing Countries (BIO) to advance its corporate strategy, modernize institutional operations, and improve risk governance. The bank has also continued expanding its digital infrastructure by scaling UPay adoption across regional merchant networks to enhance financial inclusion in underserved rural communities.
